The Joys of Puberty

The other day Stinky told me that Showboat asked him to buy a girl flowers. Stinky replied, "Why would I buy her flowers? I don't like her. I like Ciara." (I found this story quite hilarious) Showboat, exasperated I'm sure said, "No, for me, Dad." Stinky asks why he wanted him to buy this girl flowers. Showboat says, "Because I like her."

Now here's a little history on this whole thing. Last year, Showboat was 'going out' with said girl. It was like an off and on thing all year. Towards the end of the year, he broke up with her to 'go out' with another girl, HOWEVER, that girl ended up moving right after school got out. So, I guess it's back to, I'll call her, Sofia. Miranda, the other girl that moved, still says things on her Myspace about him and on his, too. Don't know if it's young love or hormones...I think I'm gonna chalk that particular thing up to hormones. LOL To be honest, if I were Sofia, I would not even think TWICE about a boy who breaks up with me to 'go out' with someone else.

Back to the flowers thing...Stinky explains to Showboat that at his age (will be 14 in Dec) they didn't need to buy each other things just to show each other they liked each other. He was telling them how they're too young and all that. I guess Stinky thought that would be the end of the 'flower' conversation. Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.

Yesterday, while in the car and on the way home from football practice with his cohorts (two friends from school who play football, too), Showboat asks once again if his dad will buy him flowers to give to Sofia. AGAIN, Stinky told Showboat no. If there's one thing that Showboat is, it's that he's persistent. No matter how many times his dad will say no to something, he'll ask again...sometimes right after he just asked!

One of the cohorts piped up and said, "I'll get them for you. I'll tell my mom, and she'll take us to go get the flowers." (Knowing this kid's mom, she probably would) Stinky tried to explain that there are certain things that have to come first. Then Stinky said, "Girls will come and go, but your football buddies will always be there for you. They won't leave you just because you didn't buy them something. They will like you no matter what." The cohorts sat their quietly for a minute, then piped in with, "YEAH! That's right!"

Did I mention that Showboat has been this way with/about girls for about 4 or 5 years now? Oy, vey! I'm surprised that he even asked Stinky about the flowers KNOWING how Stinky feels about girls coming over sports and school. Stinky's usually the last one to know.

lol - fast forward 7 more years and I see my "Daredevil" asking the same thing.

But at present, my current 14 y/o hasn't ever asked me to buy something for a girlfriend...

He probably knows what I'll tell him anyway (if he's smart).

"You wanna buy her flowers? Go right on ahead - as soon as you save the moola."

lol - I am such a biatch. ;)

Was Showboat asking Stinky becaus Showboat didn't have the money??

I remember youngest son buying a girl a friendship ring when he was about 14, I didn't mind, he spent his own money. Actually they are still friends 18 years on!

dette-yeah, if he had his own money, i'm sure stinky would be o.k. w it...but he doesn't, and there's NO way stinky's gonna do it either lol

ake-he doesn't do anything to make money. stinky needs showboat to focus on education and sports. last year, he had the worst report card out of the 3 kids. not that he's a bad student, just getting lazy and focusing on popularity and girls a bit more.

marmy-i thought it was fricking hilarious!
