Yesterday, after much debate with myself, I decided that the girls and I would go ahead and see Jennifer's Body. It was supposed to be a family outing, but Showboat went to a cheerleader's birthday party. I guess if you have an opportunity to see your girlfriend (not the bday girl) versus seeing a movie with your family, the girlfriend is going to win out....especially if you're an almost 15 yr. old boy.
When I saw the trailer for this movie, I had this feeling it was going to be a comedy-slash-horror film. Also knowing that it was written by Diablo Cody, the writer of the movie Juno and series The United States of Tara on Showtime, it was probably going to be more comedic. Well with comedy, she didn't disappoint. It's just that it was too much comedy and definitely not enough horror.
I'm not sure if the Megan Fox or Amanda Seyfried's characters are supposed to be over the top, but I often felt like it was...especially when it came to Megan Fox as Jennifer. It's a shame, too, because I don't think we'll ever know if Fox can truly act (and NO, I don't count Transformers as much as I like that movie).
I think those who like cheesy horror films will enjoy this movie for years to come. I mean, who can't resist lines like: "She's evil...and not high school evil."-Needy to Chip, "You need a manicure. You should get one of those Chinese ladies to buff your situation."-Jennifer to Needy
As I was reading some of the reviews from the critics prior to writing this post, the one from Roger Ebert made me laugh a little. He said that this movie was like Twilight for guys and Megan Fox was Robert Pattinson except not shirtless. He also said that he would watch this again before he'd watch Twilight again. I don't think I'd go that far.
This movie is rated R for language, sexuality, minor drug use, and bloody violence. I didn't think any of the things that gave it its R rating was extreme like most R rated movies, however, it is a personal choice on if you'd take kids under 17 and how young you would go if you did. I'd give this movie about 2.5 out of 5 stars.
